Ada D'Adamo
1967 — 2023
Ada D'Adamo was an Italian novelist and essayist. Her novel Daria won the prestigious Italian Premio Strega award posthumously in 2023.
Born in Ortona, she lived and studied in Rome. She worked in the promotion and production of contemporary dance and theater, and wrote essays and children's books.
In 2005, her daughter Daria was born, and shortly after birth she was diagnosed with holoprosencephaly, a congenital defect of the central nervous system that is characterized by underdevelopment of the brain and face.
In 2013, she began writing her first (and last) autobiographical novel, Come d'aria (a play on words in Italian that can be translated on the one hand as "as if from the air", or, if the apostrophe is omitted, also "as if from the air"), inspired by her relationship with her daughter and her own diagnosis and treatment.
Ada D'Adamo died on April 1, 2023, due to complications related to her illness.
